Wow! I'm a bit surprised that they'd have the idea of dumping Windows. So many people simply buttume that Windows is the only thing that can enable them to use computers (of all sorts, not just PCs but also backend servers, or even their microwave ovens). Your parents seem to have some clues. :)

Never used this thing. But I've heard enough badputation of it.

Again, you should be glad that they do have clues. At least, they know there are alternatives, even if they haven't tried out to see if these alternatives are better. (Well... but what can be worse than WinME?)

That's just fix cracks in the wall with paint. :)

Smarter than your sisters choice. :)

Rebuilding a house can be more cost-effective than trying to fix a house full of cracks everywhere.

I don't know of any such programs, because I don't find the need. But maybe, there are such programs on Linux.

Try Gnucash.

Don't worry. If you buy the concept (which I don't) that GUIs are "easy to learn", then why would it be a problem to relearn a new interface? Windows and applications have been changing their menus and dialogs from version to version, too.

They are probably a bit more technology savvy that most people in their 70's. They have a grandchild with an iBook and they have heard...

If your digital camera can be connected via a USB cable, and is not more than 5 years old, there is a big chance that it works.

An even bigger chance if the "specs." claim that it can work *driverless* under Windows NT, 2000, XP. This "spec" line translates into the technical term: "usb-storage". This is a standard that most modern digicams conform to. This allows the camera's memory to be accessed like a USB thumbdrive on Linux and WinNT-descendants without extra drivers (because the OS has a conformant usb-storage driver already). Win95 and Win98 do not support usb-storage out of the box, and would need drivers. So, these cameras (and USB thumbdrive) usually come with a driver disk, which contains a usb-storage driver. As long as the camera claims to work under W2k without drivers, it should also work under Linux.

No laptops? :)

If bandwidth is reasonably enough, you may even try a demo with VNC. :)
