Moving the parents to LinuxMoving the parents to Linux 6625 Jericho Swarm I I was pooking around with GnuCash last night a bit. As a long time Quicken user one thing that I *really* like about Quicken is how it's easy to... While visiting my parents over the thanksgiving holiday, they mentioned there desire to get a new computer and dump Windows while they are at it. They have an old system with WindowsME (the worst version of Windows ever, IMHO). It has left such a bad impression on them, they are considering either a Mac or Linux. They are not even considering XP after hearing my sister complain about it (major malware madness). I've got my sister's computer all cleaned up, patched, and hiding behind a firewall, but my parents are still determine to go Microsoft free. Currently my parents use their computer to: 1. Read and send email (AOL) 2. Make greeting cards 3. Download images from their digital camera 4. Personal accounting (Quicken and TurboTax) They are willing to dump AOL, and my mother really wants a different card making program anyway, but my dad does like Quicken and TurboTax. The Quicken thing has me leaning toward a Mac (Intuit does make a Mac version, right?), but I've also heard that Quicken runs rather well under WINE, so maybe it is not a showstopper. I don't know about TurboTax though. My father might consider alternatives if they offer similar features and ease of use. The overall interface is another issue. I like the Mac interface, but it would be a big change for my parents. I could set them up with a Linux desktop that is much more familiar to them (OK, leaning Linux now). Moving the parents to Linux 6624 With a bit of work, one can get most programs running under WINE, or spend a small amount for... Can anyone recommend a greeting card program for Linux? I'll do some searching on sourceforge-freshmeat-google, but additional ideas are welcome. Come to think of it, I don't know what is available for the Mac in that regard. They don't need much for the digital camera... I'm confident either would work for them. I have both a Mac and Linux box, so I'll probably take both with me when I visit during Christmas and let them kick the tires a bit. If I can load the systems with appropriate software before then, even better, so ideas are welcome. Thanks! Thad
