New Dutch GNULinux hardware initiativeOne of the red herring debates in the GNU-Linux advocacy debates is the hardware support in the Linux kernel, or the lack of vendor driver support for the Linux kernel. Well, for a change there is a new Dutch project - the website is only in Dutch, regrettably, but I'll give the details below - which features a GNU-Linux machine as an intermediary between a "thin client" and "a fat client". ThesimPC- as it's called - is a diskless client with 512 MB of RAM and an embedded GNU-Linux system with Firefox in a 512 MB ROM. A number of functions can be selected from a menu bar at the bottom of the screen. ThesimPCcomes without a monitor or keyboard and is therefore a bit pricey - 379 Euro, or some $473 US Dollars - and it comes with a 10 Euro per month - about $12.5 US Dollars - subscription to on-line storage and services. Allegedly, it's very economic in terms of energy consumption. Too bad its somewhat high price - or at least in terms of what you get - annihilates that somewhat. More information - for those of you who speak or understand Dutch - can be found here...: It seems to be somewhat along the lines of what Microsoft has in mind, in the sense of a PC as a true Internet client. If I'm not mistaken, then this is also how a thin client for Windows Terminal Server works, i.e. with an embedded mini-operating system, but using the server to run the applications. -- With kind regards, REFERENCE: U.S. says, "We own the Internet" 13615 On Sun, 30 Oct 2005 00:57:03 +0000, Sinister Midget Dear Mr. Midget I was talking to a colleague last year and I... *Aragorn* (Registered GNU-Linux user #223157) REFERENCE: U.S. says, "We own the Internet" 13616 begin oeprotect.scr The problem is that this particular issue has reverberations around the planet, and as such...
