I don't like that Gentoo has chosen this approach. A stage3 install was already among the options, and thus so was the current default installation method. Yet there are still users who would opt for a stage-1, myself included.

Fortunately I've printed out the documentation before this decision was made, and thus I'll be able to perform a stage-1 still. I want to build my system the way I want it, without having to install a "one size fits all" and work my way back from there.

That's exactly the reason why I've chosen to abandon Mandriva: too much decisions being madeforthe user, such as the fact that IA32 owners still have to settle for an i586-compiled distribution - things like KDE cannot even be run in a useful manner on an i586 simply because of the limited amount of installable memory on those boards and the slowness of such hardware - while the owners of all other (supported) platforms get a distro that's optimized for their architecture.
