I had the same problem with Red Hat 9, I just made a backup of all my files and changes I've made to the system and installed FC3, then I restored all my work. It took me a pair of days, but I could do it successfully.

Yes, it's a problem if you have your 9.1 customized to rest as I had my Red Hat 9, but sooner or later you have to do it. The point of no return for me was when Red Hat stopped releasing packages for Red Hat 9.

Sometimes it's impossible to do that. When I bought my laptop I knew that the modem didn't work under Linux, and that was a problem, but the laptop had a very interesting price and it was a very good laptop (it's a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600). I had to bought an external modem. Now there's support for the Winmodem the laptop has, but when I bought it I had to choose if I wanted a good laptop or complete Linux support.

So sometimes it's much more difficult than just checking the compatibility list.

I'm using KDE 3.2.3, and it's a wicked powerful window manager. It's not very snappy compared to Windows, and it has some quirks and a ton of 'why is that in there...

It would be a good solutions, if the hardware suits your needs. It depends on what the hardware is and what you would get for your money buying the hardware without Linux installed. A difficult choose.
