OT "The Evil That Men Do" 6752

How can going to school be putting oneself in harm's way? Do you suppose someone goes to school with a sign on their back saying 'Please bully me, I love it'? Because it seems to me that's basically what you are implying in this case.

I was something of a misfit at school. But I was not a troublemaker, and I did not ask for anything but to be left in peace. But there were a few people who decided to make it their business not to allow me to be left in peace. Fortunately, I wasn't as badly treated as Aragorn, and my teachers were sympathetic, so I got through it fairly well. But I might not have been so lucky. Aragorn's teachers ignored his suffering, even when it *was* brought to their attention. In such a situation, what would be the point of speaking out, only to be ignored again, and most likely have the bullies take further revenge on him for 'grbutting'.

Are they? Such as what? Being shy, being fat, being a little different from the rest? How about being black or a practicing Christian? Is that an invitation? Often, bullies pick on kids who are not even noticeably different from their fellows.

Yes, and it's probable it will never entirely disappear.

No, of course not. But name calling can be almost as devastating to some people as physical attacks. It can be more insidious, and leaves no visble evidence. Yet it can destroy self-esteem. There have been a number of recent cases where kids over here have end themselves because of it - the latest trick is sending vile messages via mobile phones.

Except instilling in its students a desire not to call names, likely not. And mostly it does minimal harm.

Then you should know that it is not the fault of the victim.
