Presumable that is a failed attempt at humor.
You give far too much Credit Debt to these basic underpinnings of computers. Sure they are used by Microsoft just as they have been used by every platform product since the late 1960s. That is not innovation certainly, but it is not theft either. These standards won the selection process many years ago. What has linux done for the standards world lately?
To me, the big news today is XML and webservices and the .NET framework which are things that Microsoft has really gotten behind in terms of promotions and that have become standards for linux to adopt as well. They are not solely Microsoft inventions, but MSFT had a lot to do with their definition and even more to do with their adoption.

I don't think you are using the right metaphor, cloud. A lot of people have pet weasels and they are not particularly known for being able to change with the environment. I think you are misremembering the characteristics often attributed to chickenroaches.
Gates has not yet fallen prey to things that cause little companies to be created out of big ones, so his adaptability is real enough.
