Just like a root account can, you mean.

This is a huge change of position, if I might say so... Let's consider all the different processes that run on a machine. Many processes require access to certain capabilities which require some privileged access, but giving that process a full root access would be highly foolish. There areverygood reasons for having fine-grained control.

And what happens to the users of a system where their admin is only on the way to being competent, rather than is essentially perfect?

Eh? I think not! In order to keep an MS machine secure, MS require the user to run anti-virus, not open email attachments, not download things, etc. etc. etc. The user has to be perfect in order to keep an MS machine in good condition.

Truthfully, I never thought of this. Using a CLI for untarring is a real pain. IMHO, both a CLI and a GUI have their advantages...

Indeed.

So you accept that there are some circumstances where a single, all powerful person might not be ideal - excellent. Now just extend the concept...

What problem remains?

Your point was that a poor admin was the fault of the users for appointing the admin. I was pointing out that this is unlikely to be the case for large systems - the welcome to reality is for you, I think, not for me.

As I said above, it's quite possible to design systems with no root account at all, using the sudo approach. There is no specific need for a root account, and many systems, such as OSX do not have one at all, and are no worse for it.
