WHat simple task? I use this box as user all the time. I can do what I want? I can install software and all I need to do is enter a pbuttword when asked. Couldn't be any easier. Typing that pbuttword now and then (which is rare to nil most days) adds up to a lot of free security.

Root linux may be more secure at the moment, but if all were running as root it would allow people to exploit things at a binary app level, modifying code that would not normally be able to be modified, and that malware could than bang away at all the other root machines - just like in windows land. Why give the malware writers an easy target? MS already has that market tied up anyway, so why try to compete.

You have to option of running as root if you want. Your choice. Go for it. You can have users with any access you want to give them. The default should still be for a user account as its safer. MS defaults to a root user which is a bad idea - proven by the malware for windows.

Smart SUSE.... Mandrake doesn't seem to care. At least in the older versions. Take the hint and run as a user...

The linux comunity atbreastude to security is what makes linux secure. The MS (and windows user) atbreastude to security is what makes windows insecure...

You could say the same things about windows running with limitted user. It's not the default and most people don't use it and some apps won't run...

Hmmm. I'll stay with the linux way. It's worked well over the last 10 years for me.

I'll ask this (which is probably a waste of time since this was from google)...

What do you want to do that you can't do as user? By your own admission, SUSE burns CD's as user, but not root. It will setup wine as user but not root... Sounds like the user level is the place to be.
