Error messages are not ridiculous. They have meaning. That's why they are there.

Besides, have you ever heard of multi-tasking? Having multiple windows open at the same time? Are you aware that you can make one window a root terminal and launch GUI applications from there as root? KWrite?-Kate? Ever heard of those?

Yes, I can see thatmceditandnanoare soooo very difficult to use - especially with the ten functionkeys defined at the bottom of the screen andF10calling up a pull-down menu - and that it really requireslearning...and that Synaptic and-or KPackage are so difficult to use, or the Mandriva Software Installer, or Yast-Yast2. Oh, and by the way, GNU-Linux may be as good as free of virus threats to date, but it's not entirely free of exploits or other security hazards. If you run as root, someone can easily root your box.

Or... you could end up ruining your set-up yourself by your incompetence - and that you are incompetent is clear from your suggestion of running as root all the time and that you find a simple CLI editor such asmceditornanodaunting.

architecture invented long before Windows, OS-2, DOS and even CP-M - and if you object to that, then it can only mean that *you* can't handle the responsibility of being a node in a network of Information Technology devices, let alone a System Administrator.

*You* may not have any problems with exposing your system to attacks of any kind, but if your box gets rooted, *we* all get to suffer from that, by your box being used in DDoS attacks or break-in attempts on our machines, or as open relays for spammers or Usenet trolls.
