If you're doing something every day, then you should be looking at programmes like cron to just automate it for you. GUIs are not good environments for handling such, to be honest, you really just need a terminal (it can be an xterm, of course) and a text editor to create a baby script, which might be something like:

cdto-the-path-i-want tar xvfz filename

then:

chmod script u+x crontab -e

And then it'll happen magically every night. man 5 crontab for details on syntax so that you can get the right time of the night. Chances are this would need to be a privileged script, so you'd need to put the call into root's crontab, but once it's done, it'll stay done - you'll never need to move your mouse again :-)

Possibly because you're trying to do something which you should automate anyway?

I think it might be pushing you in the right direction, though. The unix solution for this kind of problem, if I've understood it correctly, is to crontab it.
