Daveman,

You are talking to super HARDCORE Linux guys here. They forget the conversion factor. And if you say anything bad about linux, you are branded a troll. Then you have the problem of the WRONG distro, the WRONG hardware, and if that does not work, you are just branded STUPID.

Yes, it is frustrating to root, esp at home. The purpose is to stop another program from changing your OS.

But let me explain, and you will understand why in linux it is not so bad.

Before I get there, the fact of the matter is that, linux guys SET up the computer. You are not going to EASILTY install programs like you do with WINDOWS. Let me explain before some FREAK HEAD gets in here to debate this.

In Linux, for newbies, you wait for the package manager, your distro, to set up the install. Then you install with your package manager. You are not going to be installing stuff, in general, off the WEB SITES, like you do in WINDOWS world. For example, if you need flashplayer, it is easy to install from your distro's package manager. Not the flash web site. You can do it from your account and not have to root. It will ask you for the ROOT pbuttword.

This is basically how Linux works. And they have to do it this way because every linux distro can change menu's, this, that, and you do not get consistancy.

Many of the LINUX world think you need MORE TRAINING. For example, setting up MEDIA PLAYERS is not a slam dunk, unless the distro has done it for you. You have to go to sites, look up the information, hope the information is not very old, and configure stuff yourself. It is a pain in the butt, and frustrating. Why it just does not work? I don't know, but if you complain about it, you are a TROLL. You just need more training.

You also need to know that EACH DISTRO has loyal followers. And if it does not work, you have the wrong distro.

The better distro's are usually the top ones at www.distrowatch.org.
