Should Suse Users abandon KDE ! 1651The Ghost In The Machine I've never met a distro that was. No hurry, and I do have a spare 4GB parbreastion. I tried a stage 3 compile on my old P2-400MHz, but I gave up on it after it became obvious that the compile times would be painfully long, and the download times over dialup would be even longer. Now I have a P4-3.4GHz CPU, 5x more RAM, a DSL connection, and lots more free time. That's why I've been considering it again. I've heard that optimizing too much can break things. I need to do some more reading before I try it again. How is Gentoo's multimedia support, especially Flash, Windows Media, and QuickTime? It would be nice to be able to watch the latest Stone Trek or Daily Show clip on my Linux box. (My first Linux install was Slackware on UMSDOS under Windows 95. I don't remember which Slackware version, but I do remember that KDE 1 Beta 4 had just come out.) However, I don't consider myself a "guru"; I've tried compiling a kernel twice, and I failed miserably both times. So I need all the help I can get. I don't mind using a distro that's not "bleeding edge"; in fact, I prefer it. Unfortunately, like I mentioned, Debian-based distros don't seem to like the SATA drive in my new PC. Ubuntu came closest, but the system wouldn't boot after the installation completed. I had never even heard of SATA until after I got the computer and discovered that SuSE 9.2 couldn't detect the HDD. I still resort to my wife's Mac when I want to burn CDs. Should Suse Users abandon KDE ! 1653 That's more machine then my gentoo server at work... It's a PII 233. When I installed the system it only had 128MB of ram and about... -- Tukla, Eater of Theists, Squeaker of Chew Toys Official Mascot of Alt.Atheism, aa 1347
