(I'll presume this was a response to me. I don't back up for anyone not willing to make their intgentions known. If the response isn't to me, too bad. I'll respond to it anyway.)

Now tell me, please, how anyone is supposed to be able to pick out whichever minor piece of a post that you choose to respond to without seeing it? What happens, for example, if a news server drops a post on a short timeout, or if it never receives a particular post in the first place?

Those both happen a lot, so be sure to take that into account.

Also, why should anyone need to back up to read through an entire post to figure out which part you chose to base a response upon, or with which part you appear to be taking issue?

Why should anyone be forced to seek out other, possibly long-forgotten and-or long-dead threads and posts just to see what the hell someone is on about?

I was always under the impression the poster (buttuming a non-trolling type) held the belief they had something of value to add, and they posted based upon that presumption. I know if I have to go through gyrations to find out what they're trying to convey, I'll usually buttume they weren't seeking my attention in the first place. After all, whatever is being posted is nothing more than words strung together when there is no context.

No doubt there are sufficient people who feel similarly enough to reduce the effectiveness of whatever brilliance any particular poster may think they have.
