Terminology 101: Intuition, ease of learning
Sure. I am having a similar discussion in another thread. A well designed GUI is far, far more discoverable, easier to remember how to use, and clearly fits the idea of ease-of-use more than any CLI. Some confuse this by arguing that there are some tasks that are better suited for the CLI or that the CLI can allow a user to do some tasks faster if it is known well. Easy to learn, discover, understand, remember... a well designed GUI wins hands down. Well, ok, you likely need at least one hand to use the mouse. Which Plugin do I install tab enlightened us with this load of crap: We're back to this? Java is the responsibility of Sun. Flash is... But if you have a well designed GUI it is far easier to work with because you have the visual cues. Using VI, as in your example, there is no visual clue to hit the ":", no less the "wq" to be able to write and quit. In a GUI application if you want to do much the same you can see the "File" menu and click on it and see the words "Save" and "Quit". Or perhaps you see an icon that looks like a medium you would save to - you move your mouse over it and it pops up text telling you to "save". The downside of the iconic way, though, is too many users think they need a floppy when they click on the save icon that looks like a floppy (at least in MS Word on Windows). And even when a CLI is more efficient that does not mean it has greater ease of use. -- * The tilde in an OS X path does *not* mean "the hard drive only" * OS X is partially based on BSD (esp.
