The most common cause, IME, is the system launches some sort of device-intensive activity, such as indexing the drive, flushing a large swap area, that sort of thing, and simply doesn't respond well - if at all - while hammering the device. It's entirely possible 2K3 has introduced some new form of freezing, of course, but such things, in general, are nothing particularly new. As an example of this, I tried Debian on this box. For as-yet-undetermined reasons, the mouse was rather unresponsive; it would simply stop responding for 10 or 20 seconds, then work a while, then stop again. Mandrake, on the exact same hardware, has no such problem. Again, it seems to be an issue of dealing with one hardware device and losing track of another in the process. Since 'Drake doesn't have the problem, it's obviously not a "Linux" issue, but, presumably, a configuration issue specific to the Deb setup I was using.
