That is very true. My system was going crazy about 2 months ago, usually when I was fetching news with leafnode. The hard disk made noises as if it would be heavily swapping and the system performance got quite poor. First, I ignored it. Then I took a look at the logs... it was full of stuff like this:

So I plugged in the hard disk into another PC and the very same error occoured there, too. The HDD was definitely defective.
I could, however, save all my data, nothing was lost. Even if I couldn't have, I do an backup every week, so it's not that big of a deal. That again reminded me of how glad I was I regularly do backups. Gives you some peace of mind.
