In KDE 2.x I used to download sources and do it by hand. Then I just got lazy and used the distro's version. Anyway... That is very true. My system was going crazy about 2 months ago, usually when I was fetching news with leafnode. The hard disk made noises as if it would be heavily swapping and the system performance got quite poor. First, I ignored it. The HDD was definitely defective. I could, however, save all my data, nothing was lost. Even if I couldn't have, I do an backup every week, so it's not that big of a deal.
