I followed these directions to a Tee using the 1.08 build. Here are the specific instructions from ALSA for the ca0106:

and yet the results are:

a. an arTs error the appears on boot, or restart ( via control panel ).

Torvalds and the Importance of Linux
Don't take this the wrong way, but if you read the applicable law you find that...

I posted it to the ALSA bugtracker here:

https:--bugtrack.alsa-project.org-alsa-bug-view.php?id=729

AudioSubSystem:handleIO: write failed len = 3760, canwrite = 3762, errno=32 (Broken pipe) This mightbe a sound hardware-driver specific problem (see aRts FAQ)

this error also appears if I make changes to the sound section ( such as specifying ALSA instead of AUTODETECT ).

b. after killing the artsd ( daemon ), no sound

( yes, I used alsamixer and boosted all the volumes to 100%)

The good news (slight) is that after installing the ca0106 drivers, they actually do appear in the control panel.

My guess ( and flatfish is helping me here ) is that arTs and alsa are fighting ( in Suse-KDE at least ) and somehow one cancels the other ( at least with my cvs built drivers ).

Remember, the sb live! 24-bit is not based on emu10k1, but the ca0106 ( totally different chip). I definitely do the

modprobe snd-ca0106; modprobe snd-pcm-oss; modprobe snd-mixer-oss; modprobe snd-seq-oss

commands.
