Tidying up after Linux 16768 plus 1On Sun, 19 Jun 2005 12:19:10 -0400, Larry Qualig To download Knoppix should take about three hours, but you can buy it very cheaply from the site, or from www.distrowatch.com, (that's *the* site to go to if you want Linux distros). Or check out your local newsagent, they may have copies of Linux magazines with covermounted distros. That's how I get most of mine. I'm writing this via ssh from a mini-distro Live CD called Feather Linux that I got from Linux Format magazine, which fits into 123 MB (some other minis go as low as 50 MB, to fit onto a business card CD). Another good smallish Live CD is Slax, which is my personal favourite - Slax 5.0 runs KDE 3.4, fits into about 180 MB and is one of the loveliest Live CDs out there. That would be perfectly adequate for Linux (it's about the same as my everyday workstation PC, AKA the FrankenPC, 'cause it's a dog's breakfast of bits from all corners of the Universe). Having two hard drives is handy, too. If you like Knoppix, you may also care to try Kanotix, which is a variant of it. Tidying up after Linux 16770 snips It does do "all sorts of hardware detection", making it one of the easiest systems as far as auto-loading the requisite drivers... Tidying up after Linux 16771 Knoppix is often used as a diagnostic distro because it is so complete and it runs off a CD. That CD is compressed, so it actually has around 2 gigs of stuff... Over here they sell in large bookstores, though not always the most up-to-date distros. Your best bet is the Net, if you can bear to wait a few days for delivery. -- Kier
