I used to run virtual desktops for a while because it was neat but the novelty eventually wore off. I do have the capability to use them and I simply elect not to. If they work for someone then more power to them.

The issue I had with them is exactly what you describe. In theory I can use one desktop for development, another for office stuff, another for internet and etc. But in reality I don't multi-task at that granularity. I don't think there are all that many people with a computing style where they are writing the next great american novel in on one desktop, switch to another desktop to write some C++ code and then switch to desktop #3 in order to play a little Unreal Tournament. Once they get the rest-toll up on Unreal they switch back to their novel for a few minutes while they develop some code in-between it all.

So yeeeeaaaahhh, in theory this works. But when I'm developing software I'm usually in pretty deep and not about to switch to word-processor mode. Do you work this way? In theory virtual desktops let you do this but it just doesn't fit my style of working on a computer.

I do like the dual monitor setup though. The extra real-estate is perfect for development and debugging. Especially when I need to debug a GUI painting issue where I can single-step through the code in one monitor and view the app redraw itself on the other.
