No, Larry is looking at the surface and thinks he sees the bottom of the pool. Instead Larry is seeing the surface and doesn't realize it. Nice dream. 1. I'm not...

Hah! Wasn't it you that was justifying posts exceeding all sorts of sane levels just so all of the "context" was included? Isn't it you who sometimes allows quotes dozens of levels deep to exist in posts long after their relevance has dwindled?

Sinister Midget Quick note - This is clearly your *opinion* which is no more wrong or right than my opinion...

Why, yes. It was you who said these famous words:

Unfortunately in advocacy discussions, all too often, people lose context when you only quote a small portion. People don't read the full thread before jumping into the middle of it and making buttumptions about the argument that are often not valid.

What's worse is that these sorts of discussions can have dozens or even hundreds of messages over weeks going back and foth over specific comments. Without significant quoting, even the original respondants can start to loose the point of the argument.

Another problem is that people like to mischaracterize something that was said. It's difficult to effectively do that if the quote being referred to is still in the message, which is why some people specialize in trimming nearly all context away so that they can twist the words of the other person.

I like to include lots of context to give readers the ability to decide for themselves. Unfortunately, that's against netiquette in many ways.

Erik Funkenbusch Got it and thanks. I'll do this when a post gets real looooong...

I know I've cut scores of lines out of replies to you before because the posts had become nearly impossible to follow with all of the excessing quoting still contained therein.

Let's see the dance, Erik. After all, I only quoted 100% of the post. Maybe so I could twist the meaning of what you were saying.

Just to help you out, here's the message ID of what it was you were replying to. You know, for context:

-- Man is a bundle of habits. Windows is a bundle of bad habits.
