AFAIK, Apple is not based on Linux, it is based on BSD Unix.

Windows is not based on crap. There were and are problems with it, such as fixing bugs (as with Win3.1, Win95, Win98 was not a priority - frequent crashes, etc. even with patches, priority was apparently profit motive), withholding key OS information from developers so their software wouldn't work as well as MS, requirement for additional software for basic OS installation (antivirus, firewall), etc.

Linux is a professional OS whose ease of use is based upon the distro implementer's investment, intended user audience and philosophy. Some distros, as expressed by others, Ubuntu and XandrOS, are easy to install. Others, such as Debian, have great flexibility and tremendous freedom, but require knowledge greater than that of the average installer user. However, even Windows requires some knowledge of network theory and systems administration to set up properly, even with the wizards.

Actually, there is one scenario where you can distribute a GPL binary with no obligation to distribute source code. It's pretty obscure and won't come up very often, though. Here's the situation: 1...

I could not get my XP Home Ed home network communicating with the network wizard, until I went to an options folder on the distro CD and manually installed netBEUI. After that, I could see the other clients and access shares, modem and printer. AFAIK, this was removed by Microsoft for security reasons, however, they did not update the system to be able to work without it nor included any notes in their packaging. How many home users know that netBEUI is needed for a non-server managed network?

And if the anti-Linux crowd here would stop posting their FUD replies, would also make it better.

No, it is not because they don't have a clue on marketing.

Torvalds' philosophy was that if he made the software available for free downloading, including the source code, anyone with knowledge of and interest in computer programming could modify the system and ultimately make it better, and-or modify it for their own specific purposes. Linux quickly gained popularity among hard-core computer users. Licensed under a GNU General Public License, the system is available free to anyone who can get, use, modify, distribute and copy it. By 1999, an estimated seven million computers were running on Linux.

In recent years Linux has gained acceptance in business circles as a stable operating system that rarely crashes, and large computer corporations such as IBM, Compaq, Intel and Dell have also begun to develop machines that support it. Linux is expected to gain popularity in the consumer PC market as well.

No, the manufacturer is not required to provide source to the second hand purchaser in this case. The manufacturer's obligation is spelled out in section 3 of the GPL. Here's what it says: ================ 3. You...

Profit is not the primary motive behind Linux. Those who make a profit do it off their packaging, value added items and services they include.

It is *NOT* in the last place in the OS Market. There are other efforts out there, which have their own niche, like real time operating systems for dedicated purposes. Even Linux has a real time version out there.

Not all agree with your buttessment.

There's no loss in defending, as is, Linux *IS* already better.

I guess that is why Linux is catching on in China, Southeast Asia and Latin America like wild fire.
