That might not be an issue if the CD-DVD burner comes with. Of course, one might ask some interesting questions:

1 I burn using Company A's software. Can I read it on the same machine? (This isn't quite as cut and dried as it should be, methinks!)

2 I burn using Company A's software. Can I read it on the same machine if I deinstall the software later?

3 I burn using Company A's software. Can I read it on the same machine if I deinstall the software and the burner hardware later?

4 I burn using Company A's software. The machine decides to toast itself or gets lost because of circumstances beyond my control (e.g., a major conflagration, disk drive dies, virus infests the disk which has to be erased). Happily, the media was saved. I get a new or reinstalled machine, with the same OS (Windows XP). Can I read the media?

5 I burn using Company A's software. For whatever reason, we switch from Windows XP to Windows Vista, later on. Can I read the media?

6 I burn using Company A's software. Upper management decides to go all SPARC, PA Risc, or x90. Can I read that media on a SPARC, PA Risc, or x90, using hardware and software supplied by (or contracted by) Sun, HP, or IBM? (It needn't be a burner, just a reader -- see 3.)
