However, I forget which one, but one of the live CDs has begun running tasks in the background after boot, too. When I find it again, I'll first complain, then report to others.

I didn't notice it when run from the disc, so that may only happen after it's installed. I noticed it a number of times after install, and even found myself waiting for for some processes to finish before doing much of anything.

I don't remember which it was. But it had to be PCLinuxOS or Kanotix. I'm leaning toward it being PCLinuxOS. Whichever it was, it ran fine once it was all finished.
