Umm, not really. You see M$haft say:- From their EULA :-

Microsoft Windows XP Professional END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS EULA BY INSTALLING, COPYING, OR OTHERWISE USING THE PRODUCT.

12. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTIES. ".... Microsoft and its suppliers provide the Product and support services (if any) AS IS AND WITH ALL FAULTS, and hereby disclaim all other warranties and conditions, either express, implied or statutory, including, but not limited to, any (if any) implied warranties, duties or conditions of merchantability,...." 13. EXCLUSION OF INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL AND CERTAIN OTHER DAMAGES. ".....IN NO EVENT SHALL MICROSOFT OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL,INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF PROFITS OR CONFIDENTIAL OR OTHER INFORMATION, FOR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, FOR PERSONAL INJURY, FOR LOSS OF PRIVACY, FOR FAILURE TO MEET ANY DUTY INCLUDING OF GOOD FAITH OR...." Blah, blah...etc.

In other words matey, "If our product is installed on your computer, it's *your* fault if anything f%*ks up. WE are NOT liable" They back it up with even more clauses in the PUR - below.

Er....weeelll....NO! Take note of the Product Use Rights (PUR) document too, which can be found It's a pdf document of some 98 pages, & how many people will wade through that! I suspect that a *lot* of people won't even *know* that the PUR document is part of most customers' volume license agreements, & it is subject to periodic change. This enables M$ to decided what to grant....or take away. For example, in the section on Windows XP Professional, under "Internet-Based Services Components" it says in part, "You acknowledge and agree that Microsoft may automatically check the version of the Product and-or its components that you are utilizing and may provide upgrades or fixes to the Product that will be automatically downloaded to your Workstation Computer." By changing that term in the PUR, Microsoft has found a creative way to obtain authorization from users to access their workstations. How many M$ customers are going to read that PUR & realise they've given Microsoft the right to access their systems? All the risk for the security and privacy violations due to this, are neatly put on the *customer's* shoulders, not Microsoft's...because (as usual) they disclaim any liability for their actions. BTW the edition of the PUR I have is a year or so old, so they may have changed it again! I just can't be arsked to wade through another one!
