Companies are in business to have a business and that means that companies that are for-profit must make a profit. They look at the world as a set of market segments that they think that they can address effectively and create a loyal customer base who will pay them what they think their products are worth. DRM is a way to stop people from at least easily and conveniently bypbutting the copyright and other restrictions that an information provider may want to impose. People who obtain the material the way the author or owner intended are not inconvenienced in any way. Those who might want to do otherwise are forced to use other means, often not as easy to use as the legitimate means.

If you are a Consumer Debt who has obtained everything via legitimate means you may not care what others do or else, as is frequently the case, you may resent the illegitimate actions of others who are not restricting themselves as you yourself do. If you are one of many who do resent this practice by others, you may very well want to encourage the proliferation of DRM hardware. I myself really don't care how many modern CDs the warez bunch obtains from Kazaa or the other P2P sources, I wouldn't buy them if they were 2 cents each. I like my oldies and I have all that I need already. I do resent people who zoom around the entrance ramps on the interstate and cut back into the flow further ahead, so I can see why a lot of people might be in favor of this hardware.

That does raise an opportunity, though, for some alternatives. If enough people truly resent the act, then someone can make a business catering to that group.
