Yes, but when my kids are like that, they get thoroughly informed about how bl**dy rude it is, and it is explained to them that failure to take action will result in a) short term measures such as I might be able to take and if that fails, b) them becoming an obnoxious adult, unable to interact with most of the populous, or at least, getting a punch on the nose from time to time by saying such things to the wrong person at the wrong time.

I'd buttumed that the age of kid in question was quite old, otherwise I can't really see an adult being all that upset, more angry. If one of my kids said that to my wife then action would most certainly be taken. If they were sufficiently old, it might just be ejection through the door, with an indication that they could come back and apologise whenever they wanted.

Maybe I'm just not very tolerant of such behaviour. I mean gratuitous sarcasm, in particular. It's funny on Blackadder, or Fawlty Towers, but not when it's truly intended.
