Why Windows is better than LinuxThomas Wootten What Linux needs I'm a longtime reluctant Windows user who dual-boots Linux and uses it sometimes out of... I'm not going to say that either OS is 'better' because there are many different types of users with different needs. No one single OS-car-brand-of-butter is going fill the needs of the entire planet. It's dishonest to claim that the estimated 400 million Windows users are all stupid or wrong and that they would all be better off using Linux. It is equally dishonest to claim that Linux has no place in the consumer desktop market. Right now I have a KDE desktop running. It's fine for someone like me but I could see how a novice user (like my brother-in-law) would be intimidated by it. For example, 'K Menu' has 11 editors listed (emacs, joe, gvim, kwrite, kate, nedit, etc, etc.) This doesn't even include the Office apps which have their own editors. This could be simplified with a different-custom distro but it's only an example. My brother-in-law is the type of user that really does need something simple like Windows. (Securing Windows isn't simple but that's a whole different story.) Someone like him needs those buttistants and paper-clips to get things done. When he plugs in a digital camera he needs something to pop-up and automatically show him his pictures. He would have no clue what it means to have his camera auto-mounted as a file system nameddev-sda1. There is no one OS that is always going to be 'better' because the term is too subjective. But for some users Windows is a better choice. And if Linux is a better choice for someone else then that's okay too.
