My first PC, some six years ago, was even weedier than that. I had not CD writer, and only a 2.1 gig drive.

I was, but only dial-up. And I used WinAmp, too - I liked being abole to skin it. In fact I liked anythng you could skin.

I think my first Knoppix was 3.3. My brother gave it me, though this was after I had converted to Linux. I was still on dial-up back then, so couldn't really download it.

HP printers are good. I've got a nice 840c, never been a problem.

I began with RedHat 9.0, from a book, and Mandrake 9.0, from a Linux Format magazine special.

LU&D is a good mag, though more technical than Linux Format, which is my preffered choice of mag. Still a good read, though, even if some of iut flies over my head.

I've tried Xandros, and did quite like it, but I found it slightly limited. It's very good for people wanting a straight-forward drop-in replacement for Windows, I think

When new release is imminent, the previous release becomes slight redundant, and so available for giveaways. Which is nice if money's tight and you don't mind being slightly behind the times. I've got 9.2 and 9.3 like that.

Anti-Linuxers like to hold that against some Linux users, but frankly, if you have a tight budget for whatever reason, or even if you simply prefer not to spend money unnecessarily, it doesn't make you 'cheap', just frugal and sensible.

Absolutely. When I use Win98, I used to experiment with different desktop shells, what we would call windowmanagers. Screwed a couple of installs that way. Now I can have the same kind of fun without the worries of buggering the OS up completely.

Certainly a bit ramshackle. What's the deal with that Linux swap Solaris? Just curious.
