Why do people switch to Linux 13499
On Sunday 30 October 2005 12:55, Mark Kent stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.advocacy...: Yes. I have had to reinstall...

I started using Linux because I bought a new computer.

The old one had scsi drives and a scsi scanner attached to the same controller, when I got the new machine, I found I would have to buy a new scsi controller if I wanted the scanner on the new machine.

I was going to use the old machine as a file-print server, so I looked around on the net to see if I could use my scanner across the network. For windows there was only one company who had a product that would enable me to do what I wanted and it would cost more than the scsi controller, but while I was searching for a solution I came across lots of references to using SANE across a network.

So I put linux on the old machine, set up SANE and use the windows port of XSANE to access it from windows or Sane-Gimp when I'm in linux.

I still use XP on the desktop machine at least 60% of the time, but it's decreasing steadily.

So yes, I originally installed linux for its enhanced usability, It enabled me to use my scanner without giving in and spending even more cash.
