Below you talk about subjective opinions... I would love to see you support your above claim with anything...

Strangely enough this "tremendous overhead" is not very noticeable in normal desktop use. I don't seem to see a major slowness compared to the same app in windows. Most run about the same speed. Some slightly faster, some slightly slower.

No need to do so as there is no major performance hit. I don't know where you get this from.

Daeron hang on... am I wrong in this? I thought that as far as the processor is concerned, data and...

Linux IS a server and desktop OS already. Windows can do both as well. IMO linux distros do both better, but that's an opinion.

Linux survives because some people like to own their PC's. They like low cost, easy to get software that will run on a variety of hardware without a lot of pesky license worries. They like stability and reliability. They like to be malware free. linux covers all of these points a little better than others, tho they may be stronger in one or two of these areas and weaker in others.

A lot of mac users are using more and more *nix stuff. That's good. Apple might also eat into MS share of the desktop. Also good. With apple and linux around and growing the future looks brighter.
