How do you know what Linus or anyone else does in these regards?
People like Gates and corporations like M$ donate with much ado and fanfare. They want everyone to see just how "altruistic" they are. Nothing that they do is done for altruistic purposes, it's all sefl-serving. First of all, the tax writeoffs they get for these "charitable" donations are very significant. Secondly, they win the hearts of gullible people like you who see this and think, "Hey, maybe they aren't so bad after all." Just another form of PR.
When you donate with true care to whom you are donating to, you do so without all the fanfare and announcements. You just quietly and humbly give, even anonymously. This is true altruism. So you will never know who the true altruistics are, because they aren't going to making TV announcements every time they donate a dollar to some charity.

Besides, look what Linus and others have given to the world already with Open Source Software. Not looking for anything back, not looking to get rich, just looking for good software and letting others looking for the same take a part freely and openly. How many people are benefitting worldwide from their donation? And unlike monetary donations, where once it is spent it's gone, OSS is here forever, always providing for the community now and in the future.
