Windows 2003 is a great Workstation 12267
Aragorn That's a bit silly, you know. I used Win98 for years and it was really unstable! I just went to Windows 2000 and it is VERY stable. I do not think it is useful for Linux advocates to continually FUD MS with junk about the instability or lousy nature of its OS's and applications. The latest OS's are VERY stable and also work quite well. Many MS applications, such as IE, Word, Media Player, Outlook Express and reportedly Powerpoint, Excel and Access, are pretty darn good. The gauntlet has been thrown down. Due to the latest challenges, MS is starting to improve on their apps and OS's. MS products have many features, and many of these features work quite well. The challenge to OS to produce applications that work at least as well, or close to that, as MS' own applications. The OS advantages of FREE will take care of the rest. The revolution will begin with the business and govt world, where the FREE price tag is most appealing. Then it will move down to Joe User, to whom FREE doesn't matter so much, as he thinks he already gets MS OS and apps for free. The challenge is down. Can OS handle it? On the server end, OS is kicking some butt. MySQL was a pretty meager application 4 years and right now it is a topflight database, even kicking butt on Oracle, DB2 and SQL Server in the latest comparisons. How did it get better? Who knows? Maybe 100,000 programmers the world over working on it? Server Linux is also doing great. Challenges remain, to some extent, re: Linux desktop, Outlook, Outlook Express, Exchange, Media Player and the Office Suite. Windows 2003 is a great Workstation 12268 Bob 4 month uptimes aren't very long, when compared with the (much less expensive) alternatives. Well, Server 2003 might be 'very stable', but XP isn't. It's... MS is an extremely formidable opponent which is capable of producing excellent, albeit pricey and closed, applications.
