Windows 2003 is a great Workstation 12268 plus 1
TheLetterK Compared to Win98, which I used for years, XP seems like a dream. I know so many ppl hate it, but I have been using it on this Win2K box and it finally works well. It used to really blow on Win98. Go figure. At the moment, I rarely use it, but I must admit, IE is a pretty impressive app on this box. However, it just hoovers the spyware and malware. And opening new links in new windows is lame. and Outhouse Express are 'good'? I haven't used it in yrs out of principle. As a newsreader, OE is very good. Better than Netscape 4x and Tbird, which I replaced it with. OE seemed good as an emailer, but Eudora was better. Windows 2003 is a great Workstation 12274 Aragorn I agree they are virus magnets but I used MS OS's for years and never got one virus. However, recently I used IE for a day without... People must be so Windows 2003 is a great Workstation 12271 Timo Pirinen I wasn't there since 2001 or so. Back then, everyone said they were ok, I think. Anyway, Jim's *outrageous* statement, backed by his stupid wife... They basically work pretty well, you know. And that's really a gauntlet It's not anything that anyone I know notices. For instances, Word has a grammar checker. That is VERY NICE. I am afraid that Open Office does not have that yet. I will say though, with Word on Win98, after my articles got up to 200-300 pages long, Word just started choking and blowing like mad. So this writing project, which is now like 1000 pages, had to be broken into bits of say 5 diff files. That was REALLY LAME. OTOH, there were certain files that only Word could open, like fancy HTML emails that nothing else could deal with. My aunt runs her business with Word and does nothing but rave about it. It's really an impressive app. They work well enough for Joe User. For the enterprise? Maybe not. Well if Joe User wants features, FOSS should give him features, what the Hell. I do. Joe User thinks all MS apps are free. I can't count the # of users who believe this. They all came on his computer. FOSS offering free means nothing to these folks. The real cost advantage of FOSS will begin in the enterprise, where there are real observable cost savings to be Oh really? Why is my blog recording 90% of hits from Windows OS's? Why does Linux have 2% on desktop? Work to do? Yes. Now we're just busy convincing people that they Windows 2003 is a great Workstation 12270 Bob My, don't you set the bar high? Ugh, IE isn't good even if security weren't... That's good. Now here is a challenge for you. I recently tried to have Linux installed on my revamped system. Local shop wanted $250!!!!!!! to install Linux on my box. Windows was more or less installed for $30 or so. Windows was already on, but had to be sort of put back on to grab all the new hardware. That's very nice, but I am looking at market share. :) Same thing, market share. Once again, this is nasty because Outlook seems so hardened in its market position. This one is particularly nasty as so many enterprises are so locked into this beast. It's crying out for a challenge.
