What the knowledge base article does is provide a "backdoor" method to change a particular explorer icon view. There are far easier ways to get the same thing, but if you're determined to force THAT particular icon into a particular view, you have to jump through that hoop.

MOST users don't even understand that "My Computer" and "Explorer" are the same thing. They look different, and have different names, so they're different programs. They simply won't be looking for ways to make one look like another.
And who said anything about easier? Frankly, this is a strawman because these things can be achieved without using the method you describe, and in a far more intuitive way.
