Windows OS sounds obvious. You know, Linux can be a great beginning for such workplaces where Windows server die out. I was buttuming that there would be more Windows users since FrontPage was in question.

Thats a good sign for Linuxes. vbScripts can be re-written in Perl-Python, even PHP-CLI. ASP to PHP is also a good move. Dont tell me you use Microsoft databases. But well, if you do, there are several good alternatives on Linux. I see your workplace as the most suitable one for deploying Linuxes in place of Windows, especially when people are receptive. I would do that, atleast. At the same time, I would not leave the IIS problem alone. Do let us know how you eventually solved it.

Oh absolutely. Couldnt agree more. Evaluation time is an investment towards solving the problem without any guarantees. I tend to write my own scripts so that atleast we could document correctly what works and what does not. We end up getting to know more about the OSes too. Frankly, my major was never CS, so problem-solving is one way to get more information and technical knowledge.

No doubt. I think you are doing all you can to solve the problem, except moving over completely.

lol. Just thought of mentioning. Never know when knowledgeable people miss out something simple ;)

Time time time. I agree, Kelsey. Wishing you good luck and get some sleep.

Just a few months back I was trying to determine what OS would work the best for a particular solution - kind of subjective benchmarking. I came to a conclusion that Linuxes would do the best for that particular solution but if applied to several people, maybe Windows was a better alternative just because they are used to it and probably because of their reluctance to move. Anyway, when talking with other groups who deployed such solutions, I gathered that people use Windows because other experts in their field use Windows. ie. Customers choose Windows not because of technical benefits but because they know who to talk to get things done on Windows. Apparently, they do not know that there are several people who solve problems faster on Linuxes. All Linux needs is exposure, marketing. And of course, a helpful community of users that go beyond `man`.

Yes, it is no accident that Linux dominates the ISP webserver space. Having owned and operated...

Well said. Its too late right now. It could have been a better choice before. I hope you clone the new server, if it is Windows based.

Give customers what they need. Change the form of what you are giving, but still give them what they need. If you *are* Linux, you are blowing up an opportunity promote yourself. If you cant do it, who else can? I am hoping that you come back saying that you moved over to Linux.

Hmm, 'Go figure' you mean. Well, people will ask for what they are used to - Windows. We cannot lose opportunties like these to explain to customers what could be beneficial. If they think Windows is beneficial, just do what they say or else you might lose those customers. If you are into business, you dont want to lose customers, do you?

Agreed that IIS is turning out to be troubling. but if everything was maximally difficult, why would Windows OS be dominating? And how can we change that without whining?
