Windows out of control! 16825-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 On Mon, 20 Jun 2005 18:21:00 GMT, I don't know of a single upgrade (via package system) of a server app that I have done in the preceding 5 years on Linux servers, that didn't first stop and start, or restart the server in question. Not one.
rpm, deb, and gentoo's system all have mechanisms for this. rpm uses the pre and postinstall scripts, I forget what gentoo's ebuild uses for this, but it's there, and dpkg uses pre and postinstall scripts. Windows out of control! 16826 For system libraries, it's probably pretty safe, because the people who write system libraries have to be careful to... For example, with rpm, you can list the scripts used with the --scripts flag from the command line. With dpkg, you open the archive and look in the control tarball for details.
this isn't a bad idea, dependign on what was updated. But it's not required, which is the point, and personally, I only worry if I have a system with some oddball self compiled stuff installed, that isn't part of the package manager (since I usually build a package instead, this isn't a problem)
Agreed that uptime, in and of itself, is a fairly pointless metric. It's unscheduled or unexpected downtime that is the problem.
