I don't think it matters whether his or your newsreader can do that or not. AFAIK, UseNet protocols only support the 8-bit chararcter set. You type with any characters outside of the supported 256 ASCII characters, and anyone receiving your message, no matter what platform, no matter what newsreader, will see only gobbeldegook. Watch:

I just sent you a group of option characters from my Mac's keyboard. They consist of some greek letters like Omega and Mu, some German letters, a radical sign, etc. But I'll bet that's not what you see. If it is, let me know. In fact, if anybody gets these symbols correctly on their end, let us know, this is a question I'd like to see cleared up once and for all.
