Pure Debian is not the most newbie-friendly distro out there IMO. Certain things do have to be done yourself. Configuring sound and video for example.
Mandrake is a good distro for those new to Linux. Alot of the heavy lifting is done for you. Though 10.0 is a bit dated, you should have gotten 10.1 (nothing saying that you can't still).
Linux is the penultimate media playing platform. You just have to install-use the applications avialable for it. Some you could look for...

Windows applications do not run natively on Linux. Mandrake does attempt to auto-mount CD's and run the relevant application if it can, but putting a Windows CD into a Mandrake system isn't going to do anything.
Look on the CD for a "LINUX" directory and follow the instructions from there. Or else go to Sun's site and download their software for Linux directly.
