Well, what seemed to work for one of the genius Windummies that hangs out here goes something like this:

1. Lie. Claim you don't need all of those tools because you're smarter than anybody.

2. Brag. Especially in the face of others knowing you're full of 13 colors of poo. Brag about your smarts. Brag about not needing all of the tools that allow most users to get around for weeks at a time without having to start over from scratch.* Brag about being a super- duper admin who can avoid all of the nasties out there, including the ones that have infected companies with far better admins than you can ever hope to be.

3. Get infected-compromised-0wn3d.

4. Disappear for awhile. Probably to repair the damage. But never admit that's why you were gone.

5. Come back after your repair job and try picking up where you left off. Pretend to be perplexed and annoyed when others mention your 2K3 Server desktop must have failed and caused your long absence.

I've seen that played out a number of times, though some of them have had some variations on that theme. For example, some people haven't been smart enough to pretend that's not why they left, and openly admitted that their machines became unusable. After the razzing they received I doubt that's a mistake they'd make more than once.

* Not that they haven't been infected or something in that time. Just that it hasn't become overwhelming during that period.
