On Tue, 02 Aug 2005 03:58:35 -0400, DFS No, my criticizing Vista requirements was because it would require major upgrades to existing systems running Windows, probably resulting in many persons scrapping perfectly...

Just like Microsoft redefined:

1 "operating system" (Browsers weren't previously part thereof) 2 "completely eliminated DOS" (see Unauthorized Windows95 by Andrew Schullman for an explanation of this redefinition) 3 "fair business practices" (see groklaw or DOJ for a number of explanations of this redefinition) 4 "easy to use". (Interface Hall Of Shame, if it's still around -- I have no idea where it's wandered off to lately -- had some choice examples of Microsoft's ease of use notions; the most prominent one is the horizontal scrollbar for the file requester. The good horizontal.) 5 "pretty". (Not that Gnome is any more beautiful, at least on my system. If I want pretty I'll get Mac OSX or a skin. :-) ) 6 "paper clip" (be advised that repeating this in certain areas of the Internet might be dangerous :-) ) 7 "reliable". 8 "crazy uptimes". 9 "safety first". 10 "fix". (e.g. MS Office was "fixed" with respect to the begin bug for quite awhile; don't use "begin" at the start of a sentence -- now, I think, they've actually gotten around to repairing the software). 11 "fast". 12 "innovation" (e.g., Microsoft has innovated tabbed browsing in IE7, and apparently has innovated (again!) the ability to start things in the background in Microsoft Vista). 13 "air supply" (though one might quibble on that, as there was a band of that name). 14 "browsing" and-or "exploring". 15 "wizard". 16 "vaporware" (though one might quibble as to whether this is a redefinition or a new definition). 17 "folder". 18 "document". (Thank goodness "file cabinet" and "file drawer" never caught on as metaphors.) 19 "disk". (Yep, that's right! Microsoft seems to confuse the terms "disk parbreastion", "drive", and "filesystem" rather badly. For example, "Local Disk C:" is what one usually sees on one's XP box; the Linux equivalent would be the parbreastiondev-hda1 or a mountpoint, depending on context.) 20 "branching" and "sharing". (This is a pet peeve I have regarding Visual SourceSafe. It's annoying.) 21 "console". (Prior to Microsoft a console was a TTY-like thing or a glbutt tube thing physically adjacent to a computer unit. Now, it's a black window with white text on it.) 22 "control panel". 23 "start". 24 "desktop". 25 "multiuser".

On Mon, 01 Aug 2005 10:23:10 -0400, DFS How conveniently you ignored my followup to that post (made specifically because I knew some dippoo like you would automatically translate "better" to mean "newer")... "Just...

The only relevant things I can think of offhand that they didn't redefine are "window", "floppy", and "mouse". :-) (But they tried, at one point, on "Windows".)

rapskat So? That's their choice. They don't have to purchase Vista, and they don't have to upgrade their system. You don't know the minimum requirements...

...

(And certain individuals wonder why I'm cynical about all this.)
