The patent system was originally created so that inventive ideas could be shared and not monopolised. How ironic that the reverse is now becoming true. Software by itself is adequately covered by copyright. Copyright protects an expression of an idea, patents cover the idea itself. Which means that had software patents been prevalent 20-30 years ago there'd be no Word, no Excel and certainly no Windows. How f***ing hypocritical is Bill Gates crying foul in the famous Apple vs Microsoft case regarding Windows UI "we must be free to express ourselves" when now he's patenting everything in sight. red underlines, isnot operators anyone? Whether you subscribe to the idea of illuminati or not the fact is theres a group of people that are determined that the world should be run their way, ie by worshipping the mighty buck and f*** the little guy. They got software patents legalised in the US by some clever legal cases and are on the verge of getting them legalised in the EU by some very dodgy practises (council disregards all of the parliaments amendments knowing full well they'd have a job the second time round, then pushes through a text against a qualified majority!). Now the software industry belongs to M$ and the other big guys who couldnt give a poo about the patent system with their cross licensing anyhow.
