Nope, it's a great way to collect a whole lot of files you want to keep together for a short time without taking up a lot of desktop space. You can turn that bit off, too, or just tell it to clean up once and it will spread the icons out.

Actually, the whole Finder, with a lot of things open, doesn't take up much RAM. Unless you're running a cheap machine with 64 megs or something, this won't affect your total RAM footprint.
