People learn more by losing, not from winning. If people just click through dialog boxes and screens without reading them and are burned as a result, then they'll know better next time.

I know when it comes to my data, I don't take any chances. FWIW, Windows when installed doesn't warn or give any options in these regards, it will just barrel through and overwrite everything included any existing bootloaders.

No version of Linux I've used has ever done this.

IIRC, PCLinuxOS uses grub and not Lilo as it's loader. As far as Ubuntu installing on everything, I agree that it is pretty robust in detecting and configuring hardware, but only when that hardware is in good working order and configured properly.

That's not a bad thing at all in my opinion. While Windows will work with misconfigurations like this, it will often result in poor performance and disappearing devices.

Linux let's the user know upfront that something is amiss so that the problem is rectified instead of just ignoring it until it causes issues later on down the road.
