I probably didn't state that quite right. He probably knows (intellectually) that you don't care. Japanese buisiness...

15 years of linux, and the concept of rotating logfiles is still not in the kernel? Or is that a comment on open source softwares added to the system after the kernel build?

I will say, I got pretty close with IPCop; the system installed on the USB key. It just refused to mountboot after initializing; I'm still looking at what it did to the key. And it's become evident that what I'm trying is "hard", since complete packages of linux with this sort of thing are ironically for sale. It tempts me to build the image and GPL it into freedom, for all comers, honestly.

I think possibly I'll have to install onto a USB HDD and maybe give up on the key, to get the basics working, and then modify things by removing the swapfile, sendingtmp and logfile directories to a ramdisk, and modifying the parbreastion arrangment so that the whole thing can be copied to the key.

It won't be a distro, but it will work with my setup.

Right. In that sense maybe a straight-up Debian with a custom install script would do the trick; IPCop listed the modules it used. I'm still thinking about it.
