ACPI and network on Toshiba note 347
Peter T. Breuer Dear Peter, you don't need to be rude, I was just answering your mail. As I was on the same notebook I had to do...

On Sun, 05 Feb 2006 07:17:16 -0800, Andrew DeFaria Hi Andrew DeFaria, You are enbreastled to your opinion and I will not argue with you further as the intent of the usenet record is...

I have a weird problem with ACPI and network that I couldn't start debugging because I don't even know where to start!

When ACPI is off (acpi=off on kernel line of grub) network works well, detect all interfaces, dhcp works well getting IP instantly. Then, I editboot-grub-menu.lst and change to "acpi=on" and reboot. All interfaces detected, including lo, eth0 and wireless, but dhcp just don't get the IP.

Today I obviously use with ACPI turned off but as it's a notebook I'd love to have it as well as network! ;)

I'm using OpenSuse 10 on a Toshiba Notebook Equium L20 198: $ uname -a Linux brubeck 2.6.13-15.7-default #1 Tue Nov 29 14:32:29 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU-Linux $ catproc-cpuinfo grep "model name" model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.50GHz

The likely situaton is that his NIC (whatever it is, and he refuses to provide consistent or coherent identification) is not working at all, but he won't provide...

I'm not using power management on wireless (WIRELESSPOWER=no onetc-sysconfig-networking), all other systems works pretty well.

I've googled for "acpi toshiba" and it seems that there's a specific driver for Toshiba notebooks but that's only for enhanced features as the normal features should be covered by the standard linux kernel drivers.

I've also tried to compile the kernel myself but lots of other things stopped working and I though I was looking for more trouble... ;) And, my thought is that this is a local problem otherwise I'd find more information on the net about it...

I have a good knowledge on unix systems but only a very basic knowlege on linux kernel so I'm really looking for a place to start looking...

Some places I did look: -var-log-messages says nothing while I try to ifup ifdown -etc-sysconfig-networking scripts are clean of references to power management -etc-modprobe.conf have no references to acpi (grep -i acpi produces no result) - no acpi modules loaded (lsmod grep -i acpi also produces no result) - errors when I try to insert manualy the module: $ modprobe acpi bane: Error inserting acpicpufreq (-lib-modules-2.6.13-15.7-default-kernel-arch-i386-kernel-cpu-cpufreq-acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device
