Wow, so many questions. I'll try to answer most of them.

Apache unicode question 3391
Mbuttaging the files IS the "organic" solution (I buttume you mean "best"). If you have files in...

First off, I neglected to mention in my original post that there didn't appear to be any problems before we upgraded to FC3. I don't remember what we were running before that but was some free RedHat product, possibly FC2, but more likely something before that.

Now the diacritical marks sometimes show up as little boxes, sometimes as some odd shapes I can' describe, and sometimes as the right thing.

Here is how one of them shows up in OD applied to the page diamond.boisestate.edu-gas-whowaswho-G-GrossmithGeorge.htm, a phrase very near the top of the text in the page:

a m a t e u r 223 p e n n y r e a d i n g s , 224

You can see the open quote codes as 223 and close quote codes as 224. This is not being interpreted as open and close quotes in most browsers that I bring this up with.

Mbuttaging all the files that have this problem is certainly possible, but I'd like a more organic solution, if possible. This particular page was created in the US, probably with some Microsoft product, but I don't know. I just take care of the site, we have many, many contributors. But the fact that it used to work leads me to believe that there is some switch I could throw to get it back in form, at least for now. Long-term, we may have to do something else .

I hope that represents the pith of my questions. Thank you all very much for your replies.
