Arrow keys don't work in "read" command of bash 313Should they? I thought it just took input from stdin. What should arrow keys do? There may not even be a terminal attached! What would a mouse cursor do, for example? I don't know what control commands you mean - the above are chars interpreted by a console. Bash is not an input editor if you want one of those of those - though it does have a readline interpreter for interactive shell input, which "read" does not give. about it? Memory used but where 314 Geezer From The Freezer I like xosview that shows it pretty well. But top will show it as well...
Fix your head - it appears to be broken in some senses. If you want to use an editor to get input to bash, you will have to use one. Something like always buttuming "dialog" allows editing in input, which I know not. Use your own. I THINK you want readline editing. rlfe may give you that (but I doubt it). If I were to choose, I would use something like dialog after recompiling it against readline. I don't know of a way to force bash to use readline editing in read when it senses that stdin is a terminal. In my opinion that may well be a future wish or implemented in a recent bash version. What bash are you using? I've tried 2.05b.0(1) and 2.03. Peter
