A newbie's question about tools
Now that I have my file server running (well, it boots and stays up until I shut it down), I'd like to find tools equivalent to the ones I use under zVM. Note...

Matt -- *Thank you!* This is the sort of answer I was hoping for! (:-))

I figured... (:--) I gather that this 'kudzu' thing (which *is* running) is some sort of automounter (but again, it seems to be very hard to locate much info about it). I can't see that I need it either, so I'll try turning it off. buttuming that that doesn't affect the actual hotplugging of USB. Heh. I guess you could be right (:--) One of the options that appears in the magically created line *is* 'kudzu'. Unfortunately that option desn't appear anywhere in the man pages either! To satisfy everyone, here is the line that gets created:

dev-sda4 mnt-zip100.0 auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0

Yeah -- sorry. I couldn't recall off the top of my head (and the machine wasn't handy at the time) It's 7.1.

And yeah, I realize the obsoleteness, but I like to stick with what works for me. And I really doubt this is a misfeature restricted to that edition!

I actually noted that, too, but my machine has NO docs on updfstab -- and in factetc-updfstab.conf doesn't exist -- so I didn't pursue that. I guess that would be one advantage of upgrading -- I'd get some missing man pages...! I scoured them as well as I could without finding anything.

Black Sun and said: This happens. AFAICT, it's because of keepalive packets not going through, or possibly the cablemodem dropping connections that have been idle...

You might like "mc", the Midnight Commander aka Mouseless Commander program, which was originally inspired by (if...

Thanks, but don't bother. I'll try turning off kudzu and see how things work. Good point... (:--)

I'm not sure how hotplug and kudzu are related. I'll turn off kudzu first, anyway. I can't see that I need any kind of automount *except* perhaps for USB; if I start using memory sticks, it'd be nice if they appeared automatically. But in any case, the current setup doesn't automount the ZIP disc itself -- I still had to go root and do that.

Thanks again. -- Pete --
