BIG console problem on Debian Testing

I have just updated my Testing-Etch system which has caused a switch from XFree86 to Xorg. I'm also running kernel 2.4.27. My graphics card is a Matrox Millenium G400 (AGP).

My first problem was that the mga drivers from Matrox no longer worked - there was an 'undefined symbol' message. I saw some mga drivers in the Testing packages list and though I'd install those but, no, they depended on the xserver-xorg-core package which wasn't in Testing.

So no graphics drivers, no X.

I searched on the web and found some Matrox Xorg 6.8 drivers which someone had modified to work with Xorg 6.9, installed those and found that I could now run X.

However, in my lilo.conf I have vga=extended to give me a 50 line console. I now find that when I switch out of X to a console I get a blank screen. I still have a 50 line screen but with the 25 line character size which means that I can see only the top half of what is displayed

I came across the story earlier this morning: Somehow it reached several media outlets; probably because it's Microsoft. Think of that overblown Origami UMPC hype. Books...

Using resizecons I can get a proper 50 line console again but I have to go through this again every time I want to use a console.

I don't know whether this is a driver problem or an Xorg problem. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
